SANDYHOLME
The YMCA centre in Studland http://www.sandyholme.org.uk
Sandyholme is Bournemouth YMCA’s self-catered residential retreat/activity centre in Beach Road, Studland, the house that dates from the turn of the century having been taken over by the YMCA in 2006.
Sandyholme was originally named Full Stop and was built in the very early 1900’s by Alexander Berens who was an artist. It was built around an old cottage and was named Full Stop in recognition of the fact that Berens wanted to put down roots and cease his much travelling - he had lived in Morocco and France. He had a great love of animals and this, as well as the eastern influence is evident in the design of the house. He was a great friend of Lord Baden Powell and was one of the original scout masters at the Brownsea Island assembly in July 1907 – there was a large scout troop based at the house and some even lived in a scout hut in the grounds. Berens lived at Full Stop for some 60 years until his death in 1959 at the age of 94.
After his death, the house was purchased by a local solicitor who renamed it Sandyholme and converted it to self-catered holiday accommodation aimed mainly at ministers and missionaries. He ran it as such for some 27 years until 1987 when he generously gifted it to the Shaftesbury Society who continued to use it for the same purpose as well as offering holiday accommodation to their staff. A few years ago the Shaftesbury Society decided that they no longer had use for the property and in 2006 it was transferred to Bournemouth YMCA.
Over the last 2 years, much refurbishment work has been undertaken by the YMCA on both the house and the overgrown garden and the house has been restored to something like its former glory. The house now sleeps 25 in single beds or bunks, plus ‘occasional’ beds, and is used by church groups, youth groups, charities, extended families and so on. It also splits down easily into four smaller self-contained units so that families and small groups can also be accommodated.
In addition to holiday lets, Sandyholme is also used as a basic training ground for the service users who live at the YMCA’s accommodation complex in Bournemouth. These young people regularly visit the house and learn basic skills in gardening, DIY, decorating, cookery, life skills and so on – in fact this very much brings the house back to its roots as the young members of the scout troop in the early 1900’s learned those same skills at the house.
If you would like to know more about Sandyholme, full details are available on the website at www.sandyholme.org.uk or why not call in to see Ian Brown the warden there who would be glad to show you around. Finally, if you know something of the history of the house and can help me fill in some of the gaps or if you have any interesting stories about Sandyholme, please do ring me on 07767 202014.
